PTV selected LTK Australia to develop a comprehensive operations and electrical simulation model of the Melbourne network. Parent Company LTK Engineering Services’ proprietary TrainOps® software was used for this assignment. TrainOps has powerful train performance, rail infrastructure, electrification and train control systems modeling capability.

As part of the assignment, we were tasked with quantifying the capacity benefits of advanced train control systems on the Sandringham Line, one of PTV’s 16 suburban lines.

In the first portion of the analysis, LTK Australia applied TrainOps to quantify the capacity – under wayside signaling and under communications-based train control (CBTC) – of the line, ignoring the terminal constraints at Sandringham and crossing and terminal capacity constraints at Flinders Street, a major downtown station.

In the second part of the analysis, actual scheduled Sandringham line operations were modeled under the current wayside signaling system and under CBTC.

TrainOps was used to quantify the time required to restore service to scheduled operation after an unplanned extended dwell for both train control systems. Finally, TrainOps produced unimpeded (off-peak) travel times under both wayside signaling and CBTC with the latter providing enforcement of all civil (“timetable”) speed restrictions.
