Sound Transit uses a push-pull fleet of locomotives, cab cars and trailer cars for their Sounder commuter rail service. They needed new equipment and chose the MP40 diesel-electric locomotive, the first passenger locomotive in the US with a 4,000 hp Tier 3 diesel engine prime mover.
LTK assisted Sound Transit with project management and engineering services, production inspection, and testing and commissioning. LTK ensured the finished locomotive was built in accordance with specifications, and that it was compatible with the existing Sound Transit locomotives and cars. The locomotives underwent a comprehensive series of static and dynamic performance tests on acceleration and braking. The testing plan developed by LTK also served as a preliminary measure of reliability providing a “burn-in” period.
The new locomotives provide the horsepower Sound Transit needed with much lower levels of emissions, helping to keep Seattle’s air cleaner.
