The City of Cincinnati, in an effort to promote regrowth in its Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, established a redevelopment plan that included a 3.6-mile modern streetcar system that would provide a rail connection with the downtown Central Business District. The streetcar was envisioned to be economical, modern looking, and provide reliable service for its passengers.
LTK was selected to provide support to the City throughout the vehicle procurement process, including preparation of the RFP, guidance throughout the carbuilder evaluation and selection process, and the procurement of modern streetcars, including system and vehicle level design reviews, manufacturing, design and production testing and inspection, and streetcar acceptance.
Cincinnati ultimately procured five, 100% low-floor streetcars from carbuilder, CAF USA. Though this vehicle has been operating in European cities for the past few years, it is the first of its kind in the United States. The streetcar and all of its systems were subjected to a series of qualification tests to demonstrate that the streetcar and each system performed in accordance with the specification requirements.
