LTK Engineering Services is the program manager for the Regional Smart Fare/Smart Bus project that is implementing an electronic fare payment system to be used on buses, light rail transit, and Disabled Adult Transit Service throughout the three municipalities.

The new “tap-and-go” Smart Fare technology is similar to a bank card in that it uses an account-based system that stores credit information online. If riders lose their Smart Fare card, they can replace it without losing their account credit. Customers will also be able to use credit cards, debit cards, and other compatible smart cards and smart devices.

The new system, expected to be operational in 2020, will make travel across the Edmonton Metropolitan Region easier because one account will be able to be used on all participating transit systems, including Edmonton, St. Albert and Strathcona County.
